Urban Union Archives - Urban Union Ltd

A memorandum of understanding has been signed between regeneration specialist Urban Union and the City of Glasgow College to provide meaningful work experience for students studying courses related to the built environment.

Urban Union has worked in partnership with the college over the last five years, and the signing represents a formal commitment to support early careers while encouraging more young people into the construction industry.

The memorandum of understanding has a focus on improving the outcome and impact of social value; widening access to roles within the industry; improving and aligning skill sets to industry needs; and further supporting students’ educational experience.

Urban Union hosts a work experience programme for City students to develop skills in order to bridge the gap between the classroom and the live work environment. It also supports the wider curriculum through guest speakers and collaboration across other faculties.

In addition to gaining practical experience with an assigned mentor, Urban Union fund Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards for participants to support future opportunities and employment.

Urban Union guarantee all students who are studying a relevant course the opportunity to participate in the work experience programme.

MD Neil Mckay said, “The memorandum of understanding reinforces a shared commitment to provide young people with meaningful opportunities and the skills development they need to kickstart their career. Since the beginning of our relationship over five years ago, we have been encouraged to see more females seek out careers in the built environment which provides excellent opportunities for all.

“It’s a privilege to be able to give students the opportunity to gain site experience, providing them with a point of difference when it comes to joining the world of work. City of Glasgow College is a valued partner, so we are delighted to formalise our collaborative efforts alongside supporting its vision to deliver world class learning for individuals.”

Andy Pollock, associate dean – construction, City of Glasgow College, added, “This allows us to further consolidate our relationship with Urban Union and Robertson Construction to the benefit of our students and the wider sector. By providing early experiences and insights into the exciting and rewarding career opportunities within the sector, we can support inclusion and diversification to meet the skills demand for the future.”

Students will spend time on-site at either Laurieston or Hamiltonhill, where Urban Union is delivering developments with Glasgow City Council, New Gorbals Housing Association and Queens Cross Housing Association.

Empowering Communities: Urban Union’s Impact in Action (March Roundup)

During the first months of the year, our Community Impact Team continues to show high levels of commitment and enthusiasm for local residents and the neighbourhoods in and around our developments. Not only through leading their own events, but by participating in local initiatives and volunteering their time, skills and expertise were possible.

One such event saw special emphasis on school engagement during Scottish Apprenticeship Week (4th – 8th March). Our team are dedicated to nurturing local talent and providing opportunities for the next generation.

Showing support for Scottish Apprenticeship Week with schools outreach

During Scottish Apprenticeship Week, the team took proactive steps to inspire the next generation of skilled workers. At our Hamiltonhill Living development, we welcomed students from John Paul Academy in Glasgow, offering them a first-hand, on-site look into the every-day operation, opportunities and roles available within a construction environment. It’s our hope that this visit provided valuable insight and hopefully sparked some interest for potential careers in the sector from those attending.

We also participated in the Developing The Young Workforce (DYW LED), Step into Future Jobs Event at the City of Glasgow College, where we introduced the idea,  practicalities and rewards of working in the construction sector to students eager to explore diverse career paths.

And finally we led mock interviews at Springburn Academy in Glasgow, equipping students with the essential skills and confidence needed for their professional journeys post-secondary education.

Creating a lasting partnership with City of Glasgow College – Memorandum of Understanding Signing

Our support doesn’t just stop at school leavers, we continue to nurture our relationship with today’s younger people as they continue into college.

This month, Urban Union, Robertson Group and the City of Glasgow College reaffirmed their commitment to social values and community benefits by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding. This document outlines our shared dedication to advancing sustainable practices and also ensuring inclusive growth within the building sector. This is done by offering on-site experience to pupils of the college and hosting seminars within the college.

Supporting St. Conval’s Primary School by offering our team’s services

This month we had the privilege of supporting St.Conval’s Primary School in their eco-friendly initiatives. Volunteering our team’s time and joinery skills, we crafted custom planters to enhance their eco-garden project. The main aim of which is to build some environmental awareness among the students and get them to start thinking more around a greener planet.

A summary of March and our Community Impact Team’s efforts

As we reflect on our efforts this month, we’re reminded again of the impact that collective action can have on communities.

Social Impact Manager, Eilidh Morris is delighted with the progress, saying “We’ve had a busy spell within the Social Impact team, particularly with the opportunities to engage with young people. Our school and college engagements have given our team the opportunity to speak to students who perhaps were a little unsure of what they  are wanting to do in life. It is our hope that these engagements have given some confidence and inspiration to the young people.

And that’s what we’re about at Urban Union. Although a home builder at heart, we want the communities we create, and those who live in them, to thrive.”

Stay tuned for more updates on our ongoing community initiatives and partnerships. Together, we’re making a difference, one step at a time.

Urban Union’s Community Impact team bring a heartwarming festive spirit, providing food for over 120 people this Christmas

Community collaboration and engagement is as much a part of our developments as the homes themselves and it is what makes Urban Union unique in our efforts. With a dedicated Community Impact team and regular events and activities throughout the year in which we are involved, we’re using December to reflect on our efforts.

One of the highlights of the year has been our latest engagement, which seen our team and subcontractors donate food parcels to the Gorbals communities – local to our Laurieston Living development.

food bank donations for local communities near our housing developments

Why was there a need to get involved in food bank donation?

In the face of a burgeoning cost of living crisis, the profound impact on vulnerable communities is undeniable. As the stark numbers highlight, the UK’s food poverty rate has surged, leaving 9.77 million adults grappling with food insecurity in September 2022, and a staggering 4 million children facing food poverty in January 2022. It’s a harsh reality that cannot be ignored.

Amid these challenging times, our Community Impact Manager, Eilidh Morris, recognised an urgent need for assistance. The call to action was clear – we couldn’t stand idly while our neighbours struggled to put food on the table.

community engagement to assist local residents through food donations

Overwhelming involvement from our team and subcontractors

In a powerful display of solidarity, our team joined forces with our dedicated subcontractors to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need. The collaborative effort resulted in the creation of food parcels, a lifeline for over 120 individuals navigating the challenges brought on by the current crisis. But it wasn’t just about providing sustenance; it was about fostering a sense of support and community in the face of adversity.

One notable aspect of this initiative was our commitment to inclusivity. Recognising the diverse needs of our community members, we took extra care to cater to special dietary requirements. Halal and Vegan preferences were not overlooked – every effort was made to ensure that no one was left behind.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Robertson Civil Engineering, B2B Flooring, Cairnhill Joinery, CTM Fabrications, GR Contracts, RDA Scaffolding, and Root One West for their invaluable contributions.

Urban Union Community Impact Team Support, The Leith Collective, 2023 Winter Coat Exchange.

Regeneration specialists, Urban Union is dedicated to the advancement and betterment of the communities in which they work and one worthwhile cause supported this month is The Leith Collective Winter Coat Exchange.

Through donations from across the business, the contributions of those generous staff members resulted in over 40 winter coats and jackets which will directly impact the lives of community.

At this time of year, the challenges faced by individuals and families are numerous, the role of donations to charitable organisations has become increasingly vital. Urban Union, with its unwavering commitment to making a difference, has successfully supported over 20 local initiatives to assist and improve our communities in the past year alone.

Neil McKay Managing Director said: ‘This donation exemplifies the extraordinary power of collective giving. It not only showcases the generosity of individuals, but also Urban Union’s ability to translate those donations into meaningful, impactful solutions for the community. Community engagement is at the heart of our plans and over the coming months we are excited to share our efforts of our Team and to emphasise and demonstrate the importance the community first vision plays within our business”.

make a difference today and join urban union in donating to the Leith collective

The Leith Collective Winter Coat Exchange is a sustainable solution that aims to keep quality clothes out of landfill and in use for longer, thus promoting a circular economy and helping to reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry.

Outlining their vision, The Leith Collective commented: “A warm and comfortable winter coat is a basic necessity, especially now that we’re seeing more extreme weather as a result of climate change. But for families that have been continually stretched, a coat is yet another essential item that they are having to sacrifice. From our experience, the culminative effect of all these ongoing sacrifices can have a hugely detrimental impact on a person’s dignity and on their mental wellbeing.”

All coats are available free of charge and will be available for anyone to collect at Edinburgh Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh Fort Kinnaird, Glasgow St Enoch Centre, and Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre. Local to our Laurieston, Pollokshaws, Hamiltonhill and Pennywell developments.

Urban Union dedicated to workplace mental health

Building a Brighter Future: Robertson Group’s Commitment to the Lighthouse Club Mental Health Charity

In a world filled with bustling construction sites, it’s easy to forget the human aspect behind the hard hats, computer screens and heavy machinery. Construction workers and office staff are the backbone of the industry, and their well-being is paramount. Recognising this, Robertson Group has taken a significant step forward in ensuring the emotional, physical, and financial well-being of their team. We’re delighted to announce that Robertson Group is now officially a Company Supporter of the Lighthouse Club Charity, underscoring their commitment to the welfare of their workforce.

And Urban Union, as a part of Robertson Group, come under this initiative ourselves.

Urban Union registers as supporter of construction focused mental health charity

About The Lighthouse Club Charity – focusing on mental health within construction

But for those unaware of the charity as yet, let’s shed some light on the Lighthouse Club. Founded in 1956, this organization has been a beacon of support for construction workers and their families for over six decades. The charity’s mission is to provide financial and emotional support to those in need within the construction industry. From providing crisis helplines and mental health support to offering financial assistance in times of need, the Lighthouse Club Charity is a lifeline for many in the construction sector.

Robertson Group’s Commitment to mental health at work

Robertson Group, a renowned construction and infrastructure company, has recognized the vital role of supporting their workforce in the construction industry. The physical demands, long hours, and potential risks associated with the job make it essential to focus on the well-being of all employees across the group. By becoming a Company Supporter of the Lighthouse Club Charity, Robertson Group has shown their dedication to creating a safe and supportive environment for their entire team – including Urban Union staff.

Emotional Well-Being

Construction can be a demanding profession, often taking a toll on the emotional well-being of workers. Robertson Group and Urban Union acknowledge the importance of providing a support system for our employees. By aligning with the Lighthouse Club Charity, we are not only providing access to vital resources but also helping to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues in the construction industry. Initiatives like this can save lives and improve the overall emotional health of workers.

Physical Well-Being

Safety is a top priority in the construction sector, but accidents can still happen. The physical well-being of construction workers is paramount. The Lighthouse Club Charity offers invaluable support to those who have suffered accidents or injuries while on the job. This commitment by Robertson Group and Urban Union ensures that our team members have a safety net to fall back on, assuring them that they are not alone during times of physical distress.

However they also have confidence in their Site Managers who take every precaution when the teams are on site, aiming to keep risk at a minimum.

Financial Well-Being

Financial stability is a cornerstone of a happy and productive life. The financial assistance provided by the Lighthouse Club Charity can be a lifeline to construction workers and their families in times of need. Robertson Group and Urban Union’s support further strengthens this aspect, reinforcing their dedication to the well-being of their workforce.

positive mental health should be a priority for all construction companies

We encourage you to focus on your own team’s mental health at work

Robertson Group and Urban Union’s decision to support the Lighthouse Club Charity has a positive ripple effect not only within the organisation but also within the construction industry as a whole. By setting an example of corporate social responsibility, we’re hoping to inspire other companies to take similar steps. The more companies that support organisations like the Lighthouse Club Charity, the stronger the safety net becomes for all construction workers.

It’s essential to remember that these skilled and hardworking individuals are key to the business and only when everyone is at their physical and mental best can we all contribute as a whole to the group and move forward.

We hope this partnership is another move closer to creating a safer, more supportive environment for all those who contribute to building our future.

Urban Union commended excellent in Considerate Constructor’s Scheme

Hamiltonhill Housing Development receives top marks in Code of Considerate Practice

We’re delighted to say that following its first visit by The Considerate Constructor’s Scheme, Hamiltonhill Living has been marked as excellent for all three assessment categories in the 2023 CCS Digital Checklist.

A great achievement for all involved, it’s excellent to see that Urban Union team members have adopted our mindset re community and the environment and that they also regard Urban Union as a good employer.

Read on to find out more about the assessment of our Hamiltonhill housing development.

What is the Considerate Constructor’s Scheme?

The aim of the Considerate Constructor’s Scheme is to raise standards and build public trust in the construction industry. All registered sites are assessed periodically against the requirements of the Code of Considerate Practice.

The three main assessment categories include respect for the community, care for the environment and value for the workforce.

affordable housing development given top marks in construction assessment

How did Urban Union perform during the assessment?

Of the total 45 marks available, our Hamiltonhill housing development achieved 100% on the entire review.

During our own assessment a wide-ranging and comprehensive in-person discussion took place with the on-site team at Hamiltonhill Living, which the assessor regarded as “particularly valuable” and allowed them to confirm that the site is performing at sustained levels of conformance across all areas of the CCS Code Checklist.

Respect for the local community (15/15 marks)

Respect for the community was rated excellent due to the positive relationships which have been established with immediate project neighbours, schools, colleges, community, business, and local worthy causes. The project team have engaged well with local people and supported a wide range of based initiatives, engagement with local schools and the promotion of local business and charitable fund-raising activities.

Recent projects have included donation of Easter Eggs to Ardoch Nursery and Happitots Nursery, Robroyston, as well as helping local football club Rossvale FC 2018’s to get their first kits through a donation of £180. This was all funded through donations gathered on site by staff.

Care for the environment (15/15 marks)

In the second category we were also marked as excellent regarding protection for the environment. This was due to our systematic approach to the management, measurement and communication of the site’s waste. It was commented that the site team has done “particularly well” to engage the supply chain in planning and monitoring carbon reductions against KPIs. All of which is part of a concerted programme to reduce emissions and to align with Robertson Group’s NetZero 2030 commitment.

We are actively promoting our ‘environmental achievements’ to the workforce and public via dedicated notice boards, which was welcomed by the assessor.

Value their workforce (15/15 marks)

And finally, in regards to the workforce, the site was also seen to engage well with all revised workforce section criteria and it was commented that “the specific Modern Slavery training for the operative workforce is commendable.”

Huge congratulations again to Laura Doherty (Site Manager) and the entire team at Hamiltonhill Living for all their efforts at this latest development.

Urban Union: Finalists in Three Scottish Home Awards Categories

Urban Union is delighted to announce that two of their Glasgow developments are finalists in three categories of the 2023 Scottish Home Awards. Laurieston Living for the Community Contribution Award and for Large Affordable Housing Development of the Year; Pollokshaws Living for Starter Home of the Year.

Currently holder of the coveted Scottish Property Awards 2023 Regeneration Project of the Year award, being shortlisted for the Community Contribution category once again highlights the community based ethos of Urban Union.   Embedded in our business is the aim to form part of the local community and delivering not only new homes but making a difference with our Community Benefits projects.

Kirsty Parry, Sales and Marketing Director commented, ‘It is with great pride that our flagship Laurieston Living development is shortlisted for the Community Contribution Award. Our unique provision of a free to use community space at Laurieston, gives everyone in the local community a place to share, host local events and meetings and we are delighted to support it along with all the community based projects we run across our developments”

The second nomination for Laurieston Living comes in the Large Affordable Housing Development of The Year Category.  This award winning development and highly successful regeneration project of the Gorbals area sees the latest release deliver 191 new homes and apartments due to complete in Summer 2026 and forms part of the wider Laurieston Transformational Regeneration Area, a £140 million revitalisation as part of the Transforming Communities Glasgow – a programme that aims to regenerate eight key neighbourhoods across the city. As with all Urban Union homes, phase three at Laurieston will provide all the comforts and efficiencies you would expect of a new build home.

In the third category, our Pollokshaws Living development is shortlisted for Starter Home of the Year.  Pollokshaws in the Southside of Glasgow is benefitting from a £25m revitalisation spend which will see two phases developed over five years.  Set to complete in 2023, Pollokshaws Living is also part of the wider Transforming Communities: Glasgow programme, which aims to provide sustainable mixed-tenure communities by providing new housing, community facilities, green space and, where appropriate, commercial units. The project forms one of eight districts in the city to be designated a transformational regeneration area by Glasgow City Council.

Pollokshaws Living is aimed at first-time buyers and growing families. Previously home to high- and low-rise blocks, the development on the 5.47-acre site on Shawbridge Street provides a mix of 137 high-quality two, three, four and five-bedroom terraced homes and one and two-bedroom apartments. Residents moved into the first homes in 2021.

Kirsty Parry, added: “At Urban Union, it’s a collective contribution.  Whether it’s the apprentices learning a trade on site, or our head office and customer support teams, everyone contributes to our success and it’s down to the efforts of each one of them that we see us shortlisted for these three prestigious The Scottish Home Awards. A huge congratulations to the whole team, we wouldn’t be here without you all!”
